“Neuronal Trafficking in Physiology and Disease”

We are pleased to welcome Professor Subhojit Roy from the departments of Pathology and Neuroscience at University of California, San Diego, USA (http://www.roylab.org/). He is a physician-scientist, trained in neuronal cell/molecular biology and human neuropathology. The broad interest of his laboratory is to explore movement in neurons – trafficking mechanisms that convey, deposit, and retain cargoes in axons, dendrites and synapses. A related interest is to manipulate trafficking-pathways for therapeutics in neurodegenerative diseases (particularly gene-editing based therapies).

Abstract: A static cell is a dead cell, and life depends on precise spatiotemporal trafficking of molecules. This is especially true for neurons, where the vast majority of proteins are synthesized in small cell-bodies and transported into elaborate axons and synapses. Movement within micron-sized synapses is also vital, and trafficking of molecules within synapses is a critical determinant of synaptic function. Thus, understanding trafficking pathways often gives insight into disease mechanisms and offers clues into early events that can be therapeutically manipulated. The Roy lab is interested in understanding the cell biology of neuronal trafficking in physiology and disease using a variety of methods including live/superresolution imaging and electron microscopy.
